So for my English Class, I chose this picture of a pregnant woman holding a cigarette and a glass of wine. Pretty controversial, right? I think this will a very interesting image to write about. Considering I also have been pregnant and have a daughter, this image hits kind of close to home and caught my attention pretty quick. So what do you guys think about this image? Is smoking and drinking OK when your pregnant? In my opinion, absolutely NOT. It is very dangerous when you're not pregnant and is an extremly serious matter when you're carrying a child in your stomach.
Smoking and drinking during pregnancy is getting more and more status quo these days. Yet, the question is why? I also agree that pregnant women shouldn’t drink or smoke. I was at a party this summer and I saw a classmate of mine, who was pregnant, with an alcoholic drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other. If you aren’t responsible enough to abstain from these things whilst pregnant, I have doubts in your ability to effectively raise a kid responsibly. This gives me the feeling that you will not take proper care of the baby, and will be a negligent mother. Not to mention, the damage that this can cause the baby. The damages of these immature actions can cause the baby to be mentally retarded. That alone should be enough incentive not to smoke and drink while carrying a baby. Nothing is more sad than seeing a baby or young child whose parents aren’t going to be responsible and don’t care enough to properly raise the child. When seeing a pregnant woman partake in these activities, this is what I see. A mother who will not care properly for her child. This worry is twofold when the baby might have severe mental deficiencies.
ReplyDeleteI also feel strongly about this topic, and agree that smoking or drinking during pregnancy is not acceptable. Regardless if the woman chose to become pregnant or it happened by accident, the child will become her “full time job” and responsibility, and should be looked at in that sense. If a woman is conscious of the fact that doing these things during her pregnancy could permanently cause deficiencies in her baby’s life, why would she continue the distasteful and harmful habits? It never ceases to amaze me how neglectful some people can be.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree that smoking and drinking are not acceptable while pregnant. Not only because of the deficiencies it may cause the baby to have, but also because if you dont care enough about the life you are creating to take care what does that say about your values? What does that say about you as a human being?
